Getting Affairs in Order

January 3rd, 2014

This blog post is speaking from a personal experience. No one ever thinks or hopes something is going to happen that will leave them or their families scrambling. My grandfather was recently diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, which is another name for a type of blood cancer. He just turned 90 years old and has lived a very wonderful life. Let me go back a little to 20 years ago to explain a little further. My biological grandfather passed away when I was 10 from the same type of cancer. My grandmother married her current husband when I was 12. I am now almost 32 and he is all I have really known as a grandfather figure.
My aunt asked him the other day if he had his will and affairs in order and he does for the most part, but there are still some things that need worked out. This is something that can happen at any age. My husband and I are just about to have our first child (soon!) and are already thinking about setting up a will with a lawyer before she gets here. I don’t want anyone to fight over her or wonder where she will go and where our assets will go.
The point I am trying to make here is that you are never too young or too healthy to get your affairs in order. Here is a great link to a website that talks about the steps to take and offers some resources as well.
